LIHEAP is closed. Now what?

The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), a federally funded program available to help eligible customers in Pennsylvania with their heat bills, closed for the season May 1.

When the LIHEAP program is open, eligible customers must apply for LIHEAP funding prior to applying for a grant from Dollar Energy Fund. It’s our goal to help the most people while meeting the greatest need, so we extend the reach of our funds by directing eligible utility customers to apply for federal funding first whenever it is available.

For those of you who missed the LIHEAP program deadline or who are still seeking funding, we now encourage you to apply for a Dollar Energy Fund grant. Even though LIHEAP is closed, we still have remaining funds for which you can apply.

Like many of those who receive a grant from our program, you may be experiencing a temporary financial hardship, such as a job loss, medical emergency, or other circumstance beyond your control. A grant from Dollar Energy Fund can help keep you from enduring further financial hardship or having to choose between paying your monthly utility bills and purchasing food, medicine or other necessities.

There are a variety of programs available to assist those who are having difficulty affording safe utility service. Depending on your utility company, where you live, how many people are in your household and the combined household income, you may be eligible to receive assistance.

Talk to your utility company if you’re experiencing a hardship and they will assess what you might be eligible for, including a possible grant from Dollar Energy Fund. They will refer you to a Community Based Organization (CBO) in your area that will assist you with the application process. Your utility company will also be able to tell you about other programs that may be available to help you.
