Our mission is to improve the quality of life for households experiencing hardships by providing utility assistance and other services that lead to self-sufficiency. From the cold winters of Pittsburgh to the hot summers of Arkansas, many people who are recently unemployed or retired struggle to afford the high costs associated with keeping their homes livable. We aim to decrease the amount of money our limited-income clients spend on utilities during all seasons.

Did you know: An easy way to decrease the cost of utilities is through energy conservation. By making a few small changes in either your routine or in the products and appliances you use, you can save hundreds of dollars on your utility bills throughout the year.

Some tips include:

  • Replace regular light bulbs with Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFLs). CFLs use up to 75 percent less energy. And remember to recycle CFLs whenever possible. As always, turn the lights off when exiting a room.
  • Update appliances so they’re more energy efficient. With most new appliances, the energy saving power will pay for itself.
  • Invest in a programmable thermostat. A relatively inexpensive purchase, programmable thermostats allow homeowners to save money by providing extra control.
  • Install a faucet aerator.  Because the aerator limits the water flow through the faucet, water use is reduced. Not only can you conserve water, but you can also conserve heat energy with a faucet aerator.
  • Mount low flow shower heads in your bathrooms. Similar to a faucet aerator, low flow shower heads reduce water usage while still providing a great shower.

Many of the utility companies with which we partner provide free energy saving kits and usage reduction programs for their customers. Contact your utility company directly to find out more about what assistance they provide.

And while reducing your energy impact means a better treatment of planet earth, it also means that you’re lowering your utility bills, which could allow Dollar Energy Fund to assist more individuals and families in need.

It’s a win-win, in our book.

Did you know: Freezers work more efficiently when they’re full rather than empty. Keep it stocked! You know what that means – ice cream all summer long.
